Orange Ginger Molasses Cutout Cookies

Recipe of unknown origin that I have been making since I could hold a measuring spoon.

Ingredients

½ cup unsalted butter, softened

½ cup shortening

5 cups all purpose flour, divided in half

1 cup granulated sugar

1 cup molasses

1 large egg

1 ½ tsp baking soda

1 tsp ground ginger

½ tsp salt

1 tsp cinnamon

2 tsp grated orange peel (or whole orange worth)

2 Tbsp orange juice

Instructions

  1. Cream butter, shortening, and sugar 2-3 minutes until smooth

  2. In separate bowl whisk together ½ flour, baking soda, ground ginger, salt, and cinnamon

  3. Add flour mixture, egg, orange peel, and orange juice and mix until well combined

  4. Slowly mix in remaining flour until combined, do not over mix

  5. Divide into three and wrap tightly, chill minimum 2 hours, preferably overnight

  6. Preheat oven to 375 degrees

  7. Roll out thick on floured surface and cut out shapes

  8. Bake on parchment lined baking sheets 5-8 minutes until edges are firm

Notes

Time Bake time heavily dependent on size

Optional second chill cookies will spread, for improved shape re-chill 10-20 minutes between cut and bake
